Sealants and Finishing Materials for Wet Areas

Effective waterproofing of floors and walls in wet rooms—where water exposure is constant—requires durable, high-quality materials to ensure long-lasting protection. Finishing products in these areas must withstand moisture, humidity, and heat over time to preserve the integrity of the structure. BG Bond offers a comprehensive range of sealants and finishing solutions for waterproofing and tiling wet areas. These products are designed to address common weak points such as material junctions and plane transitions (wall-to-wall, floor-to-wall).

  • The floor sealing specification sets out general points of emphasis and requirements for the employment of products used to seal a water passage descending via the wet room floor concrete infrastructure of a residential apartment, in accordance with the requirements of the general specification for sealing works.
  • This specification is no substitute for a work specification provided by a designer or consultant.
  • Standards applicable to wet room floor sealing - Planning and Development Regulations, General Specification for Sealing Works, SI 1555, Part 3: Flooring.

Make sure that the concrete backing for applying the waterproofing system is made of structural concrete with a strength suitable for the application. Take care that the concrete is strong without loose bits, blemishes, impurities, oil, or anything else liable to impair the adhesion of the system. Waterproofing operations may be proceeded with no less than 28 days after the completion of the concrete casting work.

If reinforcement irons protrude, they should be protected against corrosion and treated in accordance with the special concrete renewal specification using BG Armoseal 340 combined with BG Repaircrete 305. To renew the concrete, remove weakened layers, protrusions and foreign bodies and cut off  exposed ends of  tie/iron wires. Clean oil, dust, grease and salts off the surface. Fill segregations, holes and gaps in the concrete with BG Repaircrete 305. The top surface of the cement water on the concrete is to be removed by mechanical grinding or spraying on abrasive materials followed by spraying with water at high pressure to expose and open the orifices in the concrete. The concrete surface shall be smoothed down such that the height of the roughness does not exceed ⅓ of the planned waterproofing layer thickness.

Before applying, rinse the surface thoroughly; proceed with application when the surface is damp, but not wet.

Concrete height boosters (girdles) are to be cast around at least 20% of the wet room. The height of the girdles shall be about 10 cm. above the flooring level, and their width approximately that of the partition before plastering. Near passageways and openings the top of the girdles shall be 3 cm. below the apartment flooring level, and their width approximately that of the partition.

A concrete girdle is to be cast around vertically penetrating ductwork at a height of at least 10 cm. above the flooring surface. Horizontal ductwork shall penetrate the walls above the waterproofing level, apart from flooring drainage and that of the waterproofing penetrating vertically via the floor. Around horizontally penetrating ductwork a covering and wrapping layer at least 2 cm. thick is to be applied, using BG Repaircrete 305.

Along interfaces between the various flat surfaces to be sealed forming an internal corner, an approx. 4X4 cm. filling is to be applied, using BG Repaircrete 305. Corners between walls are to be filled over the BG levelling plaster layer.

The gap between the apartment and wet room flooring and the concrete girdle is to be filled with PU40 and closed with a  aluminum angle bar. Before applying the mastic PK1 is to be spread.

Use BG Flexseal 160 - a single-component cement sealant used as a primer and base for the infrastructure only before applying the bituminous sealing layer.

Material Preperation:
To prepare the mixture pour 6 l. of clean water into a clean vessel and slowly add the entire contents of the bag. Stir the mixture for 5 minutes using an electric stirrer with a special spiral arm for bonding mixes until a lump-free uniform mixture is obtained. Following the initial stirring operation, wait about 3 min. and stir again for 2 min. Stir at the slowest speed to keep excess air out of the mixture.

Material Application:
Apply the material by brushing on to the floor. Spread the first layer using a quantity of 1.5 kg. per sq.m. for the layer to a thickness of at least 1 mm., but not exceeding 1.2 mm. per layer. Take care to allow a drying time of 3 - 6 hours from layer to layer. The layers shall be spread alternately  in horizontal and vertical directions. The entire surface is to be fully covered.
For walls, the sealing material shall go up the wall and height booster surfaces reaching to at least 50 cm. above the planned final walking surface level. Wait 72 hours for drying before applying the next layer.

Use BG Seal 160 - a single-component polyurethane bituminous paste for sealing; make sure beforehand that the surface is clean and dry. The material itself is ready for use and only requires mixing before application.

Material Application:
The material shall be applied by brushing over the surface - all of which should be covered entirely by 1 - 2 layers 2 - 4 mm. thick. The sealing material shall go up the wall and height booster surfaces reaching to at least 3 - 5 cm. above the planned final walking surface level. Where it is spread on the wall surfaces, tiles cannot be laid over the sealing material, making it important to keep to the final spreading height. All horizontal ductwork passages shall be located between these two systems. A period of 24 hours must be allowed to elapse before testing the seal.

A period of 24 hours is to be allowed to elapse before testing the seal. Following application of the topmost sealing layer, a flooding test shall be carried out over a 72 hour period as required under SI 1476 Part 1. If signs of moisture or a leak are discovered, the defect is to be repaired and the flooding test repeated until a properly sealed room is obtained.

To be filled with an aggregate (“Sesame” grade) and floor laid with the aid of BG Porcelainic Flooring Plaster 477. The method of application is to comply with the implementation specification. Acoustic insulation shall be provided as specified by an acoustic consultant.

  • In all events, this document shall not be such as to approve or recommend any deviation or exception from the regulations and laws of the State of Israel, especially the Planning and Development Law, 5725-1965 and Standards issued by the Standards Institute of Israel.
  • Before using any of the products referred to in this specification, the technical sheet is to be read and complied with.
  • Tiles should not be directly laid on BG Seal 292.
  • On wet room floors BG Flexseal 160 is used as a bridging material and to prepare the infrastructure before the application of BG 292, not being regarded as a sealant.
  • It is mandatory to allow each layer to dry before proceeding with the next layer. The layer must be hard and dry through its entire thickness, not just its external surface, since covering a half fresh layer with a new layer above it will prevent the material from setting and impair the system.
  • Work is to be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the relevant Israeli Standard.
  • On completion of the work and at each stage as required, testing is to be performed to the relevant Standards and by means of a certified laboratory.
  • Water/polymer is not to be added to the mixture after it dries, and a dried mixture is not to be used.
  • On completion of the work, wash hands and tools under running water.
  • Skin and eyes are to be protected, avoiding direct contact with materials. In the event of contact, wash immediately under running water.
  • The materials are inedible and should be kept out of the reach of children.
